When is Wright State changing to Semesters?
- Semesters will begin Fall 2012
What are the advantages of a semester calendar?
- There will be more time to learn course material
- Faculty will be able to innovate their curricula
- Students will have more time for summer internships
- Classes will coincide better with many textbooks, which are written for semester format
- Earlier chance at jobs as students enter the job market earlier in the year
- Reduces financial aid and registration activity
- Aligns our calendar with most other Ohio Universities
What are the differences between semesters and quarters?
- Most semester courses will be 3 credit hours instead of the current 4
- A Bachelor’s Degree will require 120 semester hours instead of 183 quarter hours
- Undergraduate students will need 12 semester hours to be considered full time
- A Master’s Degree will require 30 semester hours instead of 45 quarter hours
- Graduate students will need 6 semester hours to be considered full time
- Tuition Fees will remain the same
- Financial aid will be divided into 2 or 3 semester hours instead of 3 or 4 quarter hours
- The academic calendar will look different http://www.wright.edu/academicaffairs/semesters/committees/cal/2012-2013...
How will the transition affect students?
- It will not affect students graduating before Fall 2012
- Here is the Universities Pledge to students:
- Consistent application of credit: Credits that apply to your program before the semester conversion will continue to apply after the conversion
- On-time graduation: You will graduate in the same time frame as you would have had Wright State remained on the quarter system
- No increased costs: Your annual tuition and fees under the semester system will not be greater than they would be if Wright State continued on the quarter system
Why we are changing?
- Wright State Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution to convert the academic calendar from a quarter system to semesters
- The University System of Ohio Strategic Plan for Higher Education urged all public universities to implement a plan to transition to a semester systems to promote comparable academic courses throughout Ohio
What students should do:
- Contact their advisor as soon as possible to see if they can graduate before the transition
- Multiple-course sequence, such as math or science should be finished, whenever possible, before the transition to semesters
- Check out the course planning guide http://www.wright.edu/registrar/classinformation/course-schedule-plannin...
